Community Mediation
MCD has recently launched a new Community Mediation Center at Montfort College in Bangalore. Citizens of Bangalore will be able to seek out-of-court Mediation for interpersonal and organizational disputes from certified volunteer community mediators.
In launching the Community Mediation Center, our goal is to provide the city with a new setting for handling either small or protracted conflicts within families, organizations, neighborhoods or entire communities.
We also aim to promote Mediation as a recognized and popular practice of resolving conflict in India. In many countries, Mediation is now understood as a credible and necessary alternative to conflict avoidance, escalation or lengthy court procedures. The same understanding is beginning to emerge in India – the Indian Supreme Court is now actively promoting Mediation!
The MCD Community Mediation Center will address the following types of disputes:
- Family disputes between couples, parents and children or relatives.
- Neighborhood disputes where there is a breakdown in communication and relationships between or among neighbors.
- Housing disputes between landlords and tenants and which are triggered by unpaid rents, maintenance and nuisance issues and unstated needs and expectations.
- Community disputes defined by tensions, difficult interactions and protracted conflicts within and between communities.
- Organizational disputes where there is disagreement or poor communication between or among employees, managers, partners or board members.
In general, any kind of dispute is suitable for Mediation, especially those involving long-term relationships. The only requirement is that all parties voluntarily decide to participate in the process.
The MCD Community Mediation Center will perform two main functions:
- Enable disputing parties to meet with professional mediators who will assess the situation and evaluate whether Mediation can be of value.
- Provide the services of professional mediators in the event that Mediation is determined to be appropriate and all parties voluntarily decide to participate.
Scheduled mediation sessions will be conducted on-site at the MCD Community Mediation Center. Each session will typically last 1-3 hours. Parties may require from 1-2 sessions up to 9 sessions, depending on the nature of the dispute.
