Family Mediation
“Marriage cannot survive on its own. Both partners need to make genuine efforts… mediation is a tool which can help couples realize differences and efforts needed to resolve those differences.
Overall, [mediation] helped us a lot and we found improvements in our relationship. It was a good experience, and most importantly, it saved our marriage.”
~ MCD Family Mediation participant
MCD began its Family Mediation program in response to recent changes in the Indian family. Whereas the institutions of marriage and family have always been highly regarded in India, today the traditional family model is changing because of the pressures of urbanization and globalization.
Financial issues, communication breakdowns, a lack of work-life balance, lifestyle differences and generation gaps can create great upheaval in families with serious consequences for family members.
Mediation helps family members understand each other better, negotiate differences and come up with their own way of resolving disputes. The process actively engages them in opening communication and strengthening relationships.
With Family Mediation, MCD offers families an alternative to their own relatives and friends, counselors and especially the court system for resolving interpersonal conflicts.
MCD mediators act as neutral “third parties” who:
- Are trained and certified in managing interpersonal conflicts.
- Create a safe and non-judgmental space for disputing parties to have honest and open discussion.
- Teach parties constructive ways to improve communication and resolve their own conflicts.
The MCD Family Mediation program welcomes all types of family-related disputes. Each mediated session generally lasts from 1-3 hours. Parties may require from 1-2 sessions up to 9 sessions, depending on the nature of their dispute.
